Forest Road 18 Closed Due to Flooding Impacts

June 20, 2024, Santa Fe, N.M.-The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) is closing Forest Road 18 in the Pecos/Las Vegas District to protect the safety of visitors and community members. The burned area saw between 0.5 inches and over 4 inches of rain fall over the past 24 hours, with the Gallinas Canyon area experiencing 4.65 inches of rainfall. Sections of Forest Road 18 were eroded and washed out a result of runoff caused by the heavy rainfall. The District is working to obtain resources to repair the road and once done, the road will be reopened.

SFNF District Rangers make decisions to close roads based on the safety of our visitors, local communities, and employees and to protect natural and cultural resources. Roads are closed to keep motorists safe, so please do not cross flooded roadways or drive around barricades.

Motorists should remain vigilant to the potential of rock or debris on roads in areas of steep terrain.

To stay up to date on closures, visit the SENF website, SENF Facebook page, and the SENF X page. For more information on weather alerts, visit: https://www.weather.gov/abg/.
