Resolution to Ban Fireworks Passes

SANTA FE, NM– On June 11, 2024, the Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution 2024-078, declaring extreme or severe drought conditions and banning the sale and use of certain fireworks in the unincorporated and wildland areas in Santa Fe County.

Due to persistent drought and the immediate danger of range, brush, grass and forest fires, the Santa Fe County Fire Marshal proposed the ban of sales and use of certain fireworks, including missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick-type rockets and ground audible devices. The adopted resolution will remain in effect for 30 days from today, June 13, 2024, and may be reissued if continued drought conditions warrant further action be taken.

Fire Marshal Blay explained, “Currently, there are two (2) or more wildfires burning in the State of New Mexico including the Indios and Blue 2 fires. Due to the significant fire danger and prevailing drought conditions, the New Mexico State Forester has concurred with our decision to ban the use of fireworks because abnormally warm temperatures, low humidity, high winds, and the abundance of dry fuel material increase the chances of fire incidents. Under these circumstances, this ban will reduce the likelihood of an accidental human-ignited wildland fire, improve public and firefighter safety, and preserve property in Santa Fe County”.

Commissioner Hamilton emphasized the importance of the ban, stating, “Many constituents and Fire Department volunteers are concerned about fires, and this is the most responsible course of action. I fully support this ban and appreciate that the Fire Department is closely monitoring our conditions.”

The Santa Fe County Fire Department takes the potential and risks of wildland fire seriously. The community is highly encouraged to leave fireworks displays to professionals and to attend professionally produced public displays for a safe 4th of July holiday.
