Wildfire prevention ahead of 4th of July holiday

Santa Fe, N.M., July 2, 2024-Every year, thousands of wildfires are sparked on public lands by fireworks. Fireworks are illegal to use in national forests every day of the year. You can help the SFNF to prevent unwanted human-caused wildfires by practicing safe and responsible campfire management.

Responsible campfire tips:

  • Campfire rings should be clear of flammable debris for three feet in every direction.
  • All campfires must be extinguished before campers depart their campsites, even if they will only be gone for a couple of hours.
  • For more information on responsible campfire management, visit Smokey’s campfire page.

Fire prevention patrols will be checking campsites through the holiday weekend, and tickets will be written and issued to visitors for unattended campfires. Consider celebrating in alternative ways such as: using glow sticks, having an outdoor movie night with a projector, or finding professional fireworks shows nearby.

All SFNF offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4 in observance of the holiday, and will resume regular business hours on Friday, July 5.

To learn more about fire prevention and education, visit the National Interagency Fire Center’s website, the SFNF website, the SFNF Facebook page, and the SFNF X page. Stay safe out there!
